In the fall of 1950, Edgar Boettcher Jr. turned down a foreman's position to found Edgar Boettcher Mason Contractor, Inc. The business was started with Ed as the only brick mason, a laborer (his father in-law), a set of brick tongs, 4 plank, 2 sawhorses, and a borrowed wooden mortar box and hoe. His first project was the brick veneer on a home in Saginaw, Michigan. Boettcher Masonry quickly made the move from residential masonry to specializing in masonry services for commercial and industrial construction. Upon Ed Jr.'s retirement, the business was taken over by Edgar Boettcher III and Steve R. Fournier. Michael Radosa, a promising foreman with Boettcher Masonry, later joined the company to round off the ownership. Boettcher Masonry was the first known mason contractor in the United States to have earned the comprehensive ISO certification in April of 2001. Based on revenue, Engineering News-Record has ranked Edgar Boettcher Mason Contractor, Inc. as one of the top 20 mason contractors in the nation for six consecutive years. Emphasis on training for employees has enhanced our superior safety record. Routine training is held for our brick mason foremen. First aid, CPR, scaffolding, wall bracing, and forklift training are regularly offered for all employees. We are proud of our 31 employees with Masonry Certification from the Masonry Institute of Michigan, 23 employees with Reinforcing Walls and Grouting Certification, and 2 certified Special Inspectors of Structural Masonry. We are proud and confident that we have the resources, knowledge, and experience to get the job done safely, quickly, and efficiently. In 1946, Edgar Boettcher Jr. was an apprentice in Saginaw, Local 7. During 1949, he went to work for Ditmar, Ditmar, and Pickens in Albion. In 1950, he returned to Saginaw to form Edgar Boettcher Mason Contractor, Inc. Ed had the ability to motivate and support his employees while creating an atmospere that promoted employee growth and improvement. Ed Jr. helped to build and promote masonry construction throughout his career and was awarded his 50-year card in 1996. He always felt masonry was a full-time career that required professional training and adequate compensation and benefits to uphold the pride and integrity of the profession. He has held numerous positions in the masonry industry, including President of the Michigan Mason Contractors Association. He was the first subcontractor to serve as President of the Saginaw Valley Contractors Association. He was one of the founders of the Local 7 apprenticeship program and served as trustee for many years. He was instrumental in the creation of the Bricklayer Pension Fund for Local 7 where he served on the board until 2002. He served on various labor negotiating teams between 1953 until he retired in 1984. He also served as an arbitrator for the American Arbitrator Association and as a member of the AGC(Associated General Contractors) Labor Advisory Committee. In 1997 he was the recipient of the Contractor/Owner Michigan Bricklayer Hall of Fame Award. He was also a member of several fraternal organizations and was Elk of the year in 1968." |
